We went especially to see the Santa Semana processions in Antigua, but when we arrived in Guatemala City a week earlier, Easter was already out in full force. With a higher level of poverty in the capital, Easter was often recognized by flying purple garbage bags out the windows of run-down apartments, but in wealthier Panachel and Antigua, the purple banners were often silk or velvet.
Hoards of little pilgrims were often seen on the streets.
Al stood at the end of this brilliantly coloured sawdust ‘alfombra’, taking photos as one of the Easter Processions came swaying towards him, destroying the handmade carpet. Eventually a white-gloved policeman firmly led him off the road and out of the way…
