I thought I was the only crazy person who took photos of electrical wiring. But the power lines in Hanoi are so insane they are even featured on t-shirts and in paintings!
In Hanoi, a linesman works on a zillion electrical wires all at one time!
Imagine how much he has to know just to figure out which line is live!
Some T-shirts featuring the powerlines.
An artist puts the final touches on a painting of Hanoi’s amazing powerlines.

I thought the same thing when I was there. I can’t believe a lineman can actually figure out what’s what. It looks like a dangerous job. I saw the same sorts of wiring messes in parts of Delhi, and to a lesser extent in Bucharest. I’m amazed there hasn’t been a massive overload and giant fire.
I have some wild and crazy wiring shots from Delhi too, and must now head off to Bucharest to see what I’ve missed!
And somehow it works…
It actually works really well. I have seen wiring almost as bad as this in both India and Mexico, and both places were prone to brown-outs and power failures – something we never experienced in Vietnam!
I have seen it in India and Philippines too. Perhaps you will make your way to Phils? 🙂
I might go to the Philippines just for the wiring! (Actually I’ve heard all sorts of good things about it so it might not be JUST for more photos of wiring.)
Jesus! Really crazy, indeed! Nice set!
Ohh my god what all these. It was a very risky thing. How they are managing the maintenance if any faults occurs.
I have no idea of the life expectancy of the average Vietnamese electrician – it doesn’t seem possible to keep track of all the wires but somehow they do. And it all works!
