The Oxford Dictionary’s definition of ‘Gleam: (Of a smooth surface or object) reflect light because well polished’ didn’t seem exactly right to me, but I haven’t been able to come up with a better one.
Of course I know a gleam when I see one so here are a few from around the world.
A highly-polished brass chandelier in the new church of Delft reflects the church’s many arched windows. The brass of the chandelier gleams; the lights themselves glow. (My definition of gleam from this photo: shiny metallic surface reflecting sources of light in a dim room.)
A gleaming brass Buddha reflecting light at the Relic of the Buddha Hair Temple in Yangon, Myanmar. (My definition of gleam from this photo: shiny metallic surface reflecting light.)
Reflection of Jaipur Palace in large polished silver jar. (My definition of gleam from this photo: shiny metallic surface reflecting light.)
The Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao has more of a sheen to its surface but the sculpture of shiny metallic bubbles gleams. (My definition of gleam from this photo: highly-polished metallic surface reflecting light.)
Like the Gehry building, the Planet Hollywood building has more of a sheen, but when it’s reflected in the shiny windows of the building opposite it, the metallic dots covering its surface gleam. (My definition of gleam from this photo: shiny glass surface reflecting light from metallic objects.)
An installation art piece of shiny balloons in Vancouver not only gleam, they also have a bit of glare. (My definition of gleam from this photo: highly-polished metallic surface reflecting light.)
A car in Ho Chi Minh City at night gleams under the neon signs. (My definition of gleam from this photo: highly-polished vehicle and glass windows reflecting neon lights)
So I guess my final definition of gleam is: highly-polished shiny metallic-like surface reflecting light.
I like your collection!
Gorgeous shots, that Jaipur Palace photo is stunning. xxx
You really got me going with gleam; I was trying to define all the ‘GL’ words: gleam, glow, glisten, glimmer, glint, glare…
