Lower Antelope Canyon in Arizona

This week I’m looking every which way at Lower Antelope Canyon.

Lower Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon whose sandstone walls have been eroded into curvilinear shapes by the rushing waters of flash floods over the millennia.

September 30.

Located on Navajo lands east of Page, Arizona, USA, the Navajo run tours through the canyon. The day we arrived in early October it was clear, sunny and freezing, and the lady who sold us our tickets told us she had a nice little heater in her booth.

We were sent down with a guide who accompanied our tour with haunting guitar riffs that showed off the cavern’s acoustics – perfect music for exploring the canyon.

Ten feet away its owner was busy picking up handfuls of sand from the cavern floor and throwing them into a feeble sunbeam. He then rushed back to take a photo before the dust subsided and the sunbeam almost disappeared. Yes, he was after THE ‘sunbeam’ shot, and getting very frustrated.

I warned him to be careful; all that dust isn’t particularly good for a high end camera – I know that from experience! He lit up when he saw me and asked if I could take the photo on his camera the second he stopped throwing sand. So I took a couple of photos on his camera and then this one on mine…Lower Antelope Canyon

Lower Antelope CanyonBonus video! Our guide was also an incredible guitar payer and wrote music that was perfect within the curving formations of Antelope Canyon. Here I have added his haunting music to images of the canyon.

Our visit was in late September 2009, and the place wasn’t as popular as it is nowadays – we were allowed to leave the tour and just wander around taking photos, something that apparently doesn’t happen any more.
